Grief and Bereavement

What is grief?

Grief is a natural response to loss. It is the emotional suffering you feel when something or someone you love is taken away. You may associate grief with the death of a loved one - and this type of loss does often cause the most intense grief. But all loss can cause grief, including:

  • A relationship breakup
  • Loss of health
  • Losing a job
  • Loss of financial stability
  • A miscarriage
  • Death of a pet
  • Loss of a cherished dream
  • A loved one's serious illness
  • Loss of a friendship
  • Loss of safety after a trauma

Finding Support after a Loss

When experiencing grief, we often feel isolated, lonely and like nobody understands what we are going through. It can also be hard to share these feelings with those close to us, such as family members or friends. That is why it can help to talk to someone who is distant from the situation, or someone who has been in the same situation.

If you are in crisis, emergency services are available by calling 911 or visit your local emergency department.
