The Pharmacy Department is under the direction of the Regional Director of Pharmacy and Respiratory Therapy.

Charles L. LeGrow Health Centre, Port-aux-Basques	Monday to Friday 0800 to 1600 hours

Services Provided

The role of the Pharmacy Department is to promote the safe, effective, rational and economic use of drugs. The mission statement for the Pharmacy Department is that the Pharmacy shall dispense drugs, monitor and promote effective drug therapy and provide current professional advice and information regarding drugs and speciality programs to other health care providers in a timely and effective manner.

Western Health has three hospital pharmacy departments, at Charles L. LeGrow Health Center, Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital, as well as Western Memorial Regional Hospital. These sites provide pharmacy services to the various hospitals, LTC facilities, and medical clinics in the region. With the exception of the Regional Director of Pharmacy / Respiratory Therapy, all other pharmacy staff are unionized. The stated objectives of the Pharmacy are as follows:

• Procure and store an adequate inventory of drugs, as approved by the Regional Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, for use by physicians and other hospitals, nursing homes, and medical clinics in the Western Health Care Region.
• Dispense, distribute and control all drugs issued to patients, nursing units and other hospital departments as per Federal, Provincial and Accreditation regulations.
• Represent pharmacy on all hospital committees concerned with drug therapy, patient education, patient care planning, medical and drug standards and safety. Confer with all the professional, paramedical groups and others who have an interest in patient care.
• Maintain an adequate drug information library and provide information to the physicians, nurses, other paramedical staff, and patients in the region.
• Provide sound fiscal management of the resources available.
• Direct the functions of the Western Memorial Regional Poison Control Center.
• To improve patient quality of life through the implementation of pharmaceutical care, when an individual pharmacist takes responsibility for an individual patient’s drug therapy. Specifically, this involves identifying potential or actual drug related problems, resolving actual drug related problems, and preventing potential drug-related problems.
