Audiologists identify, assess, and provide intervention to individuals of all ages who have hearing loss or who are at risk of having hearing loss. A variety of tests can be completed depending on the age of the client and the concerns presented. Intervention is most commonly provided in the form of communication strategies as well as the recommendation of hearing aids if appropriate. Audiologists in Western Health also dispense hearing aids through the provincial hearing aid program for those who qualify. Audiologists also provide education to the consumer, other professionals, and the general public regarding topics related to hearing such as the signs of hearing loss and prevention of hearing loss.
Self-referrals are accepted. There is currently a significant waiting time for routine referrals, although referrals are prioritized if necessary.
Within Western Health, audiologists are located at WMRH site in Corner Brook and the Rehab Annex in Stephenville. Offices are open daily from Monday to Friday. Travelling clinic to the Northern Peninsula is held twice yearly, in spring and fall. Clinics are also held in Port-aux-Basques at various times throughout the year.
