Western Health Achieves Highest Level of Accreditation Status

Dec 3, 2018

Western Health is pleased to announce that it has received the highest level of accreditation, Accredited with Exemplary Status, achieving a 98 per cent compliance rate with Accreditation Canada’s national standards of excellence.

“I would like to publicly thank everyone who participated in the Accreditation process, including the patients, clients, family members and community partners who offered their valuable perspective to a process that directly supports our ability to improve care and service delivery,” said Ms. Cindy Davis, President and CEO. “Our employees continue to demonstrate their commitment to providing safe and excellent care that is focused around our clients, patients, residents and their families and we are very proud of them.”

In October 2018, a team of Accreditation Canada surveyors visited 16 sites across the Western Health region including hospitals, long-term care facilities, and community-based offices. The whole organization is involved in accreditation, from front-line staff and volunteers to board members, patients and families. The on-site surveyors met with staff in programs areas including acute care, community and public health, emergency, laboratory, long term care, medical imaging and mental health and addictions.  The focus of accreditation is on the processes used to deliver care, not the individual health care providers.

The results of the on-site survey point to areas of success and areas where the organization can focus its improvement efforts. In its report, Accreditation Canada stated: “The person centred care philosophy and approach Western Health has embarked on will help them get valuable input and feedback to guide their work in service and care delivery.”

The accreditation survey takes place every four years to assess a health organization’s compliance with national quality and safety standards in all areas of the system, including leadership, governance, person- and family centered care, emergency preparedness, infection prevention and control, and most importantly, direct provision of care.
