Vision Restoration

Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery is performed both at Western Memorial Regional Hospital and Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital.  There are generally over 450 cataract surgeries performed in total each year.  You may request to have your cataract surgery performed at either hospital.

Wait times for Cataract surgery are being monitored by each regional health authority in the province and reported four times per year to the Department of Health and Community Services.  A benchmark of 112 days has been set down by Health Canada as a reasonable length of time a patient in Canada should wait for non urgent cataract surgery. Wait times reported are for the first eye requiring cataract surgery.

What is Cataract Surgery?

A cataract is a small cloudy area in the lens of the eye that blocks the passage of light to the retina.  Cataract surgery is the removal of the cataract and implantation of an artificial lens to correct vision loss.
