Cervical Screening Initiatives

The Provincial Cervical Screening Initiatives Program is fully implemented throughout the province of Newfoundland and Labrador with regional coordinators in place in all health authorities. The provincial team will be working collaboratively with outside groups to do broad based and direct target initiatives aimed at increasing screening rates - especially in the underscreened and unscreened population.

The benchmark for screening in Newfoundland and Labrador is one pap test per year for women aged 20-69 years. The national benchmark is one pap test in three years after two normal pap tests.  The rationale for this difference is that this province does not currently have an organized screening program. Setting the criteria higher until an organized program is in place, will ensure women will not be lost.
