A Regional Approach to Social Supportive Housing in the Western Region

Effective October 2008, Western Health will be introducing a regional approach to entry into its’ Affordable Housing for Seniors. The improvements are being implemented in order to better meet the housing needs of low income seniors within the Western Region.

“What we have seen historically, is that access to Western Health’s Affordable Housing for Seniors has been on a first come first serve basis,” said Kelli O’Brien Vice President of Long Term Care and Rural Health. “These changes will mean that the senior with the greatest need for Western Health’s housing will be selected first.”

The changes will see a standard application and health certificate used for all seniors who would like to avail of the housing. As well, guidelines have been established for a consistent needs-based selection process. A Regional Tenant Selection Committee will review all applications for vacancies and prioritize and approve tenant selection for cottages and apartments operated by Western Health.

Currently, Western Health operates 38 cottages in Stephenville Crossing, 20 cottages and a 21 unit apartment building in Port Aux Basques and Corner Brook currently has 48 Duplex Cottages: 44 Row Type Units, as well as 12 Units, Apartment Style.

With this change in selection process, current applicants will be contacted by Western Health staff to fill out the new application form and health certificate. All applicants still must meet all age and income criteria to be eligible.
