Western Health would like to advise that earlier today, Saturday, 31 May 2008 at 1:08 PM, a contractor working on the roof of Western Memorial Regional Hospital in Corner Brook ignited some roofing material near an intake fan on the top of the building. This produced fumes and a strong smell of smoke on the fourth floor of the hospital. The Corner Brook Fire Department responded immediately.

The nursing staff on floor 4B – Surgery immediately relocated their patients to the adjoining 4A Surgical unit as a precautionary measure. There was never any danger to residents or staff of the facility but the five patients from the Intensive Care Unit, also located on the fourth floor, were reallocated to the main Recovery Room on the second floor, also as a precautionary measure.

Employees throughout the building were notified of the events that had transpired so they could ease the fears and concerns of patients and their families throughout other parts of the facility.

Western Health would like to commend its staff who were involved in this event, and would like to recognize them publicly for their professionalism.

Western Health also would like to express its thanks to the Corner Brook Fire Department for their immediate response.
