Western Health and Canadian Blood Services are celebrating a successful partnership in 2009 and renewing membership in “Partners for Life” for 2010.

“We are pleased to have surpassed our commitment to this program,” says Dr. Minnie Wasmeier, Chief Operating Officer of Secondary Services of Western Health. “We are thankful to our employees for honouring our pledge and donating their blood and time to this very important action.”

In 2009 Western Health pledged 50 of their employees to donate blood. By the end of the year 51 employees had donated 106 units of blood, fulfilling their pledge at 212%. Dr. Wasmeier is extending a challenge to employees to continue donating and meet or exceed the pledge amount of 75 members for 2010.

“Partners for Life” is a corporate community program that provides a vital connection between hospital patients and community organizations across the country. As a member of this program, Western Health’s over 3000 health care and support services professionals and families and friends have made the commitment to donate blood to help those whose lives depend on blood and blood products.

“Partnerships like this one with Western Health are at the foundation of Canada’s blood system and Canadian Blood Services is excited that Western Health has increased their commitment for 2010,”  says Peter MacDonald, Director of Donor and Clinic Services, Canadian Blood Services Atlantic. “On average, every 60 seconds someone in Canada requires blood, and since it have a limited shelf life, demand is constant. The employees of Western Health see first hand every day the important role that blood and blood products play to help hospital patients on their road to recovery.”

Western Health Employees can donate blood in Corner Brook at 3 Herald Avenue on Wednesday and Thursday from 11:30 am – 2:30 pm, and 4 – 7 pm.  For blood donor clinics outside of Corner Brook, Western Health employees are encouraged to call 1 888 2 DONATE (1 888 236 6283) for the location of a blood donor clinic in or near their community. Western Health employees are also reminded to inform Canadian Blood Services staff they are employees of Western Health when they are rolling up their sleeves.
