This week is National Non-Smoking Week, January 17 – 23rd, 2010.  The theme for the week is “Quitting is contagious, pass it on.”  Western Health would like to encourage the public to consider becoming or staying smoke free and to remind the public to respect their “Smoke Free Properties” Policy.

The Smoke Free Policy asks people to refrain from smoking on all Western Health properties including hospitals, clinics, offices, and parking lots. Clients are also asked to refrain from smoking when receiving a visit from a health care professional in their home, and for an hour prior to the visit.  The policy has been in place since July 2008.

“It is important that we encourage the people or our region to be smoke free,” said Susan Gillam, CEO for Western Health.  “We know that there is a high incidence of smoking in our region and we feel that it is critical to continue to promote the public to become smoke free and to stay smoke free.”

National Non-Smoking Week has been observed for more than 30 years in Canada.  The goals of the week are to educate Canadians on the dangers of smoking, to help people quit smoking, to promote the rights of individuals to breathe air that is unpolluted by tobacco smoke, and to assist in the attainment of a smoke free society in Canada.
