Women and Children's Health Unit

Women's and Children's Health

Western Memorial Regional Hospital has a 15 bed Women and Children's Health Unit.

8 beds are utilized for the pediatric population aged 28 days up to 18 years. Of these 8 beds, 4 beds are designated for Adolescent Mental Health. The remaining 7 beds are dedicated to Women’s Health, mainly  for women requiring alternate level of care (ALC), although women with other health related issues may also be located here.

In Pediatrics (Children's Health), we provide a wide range of services, including medical, surgical, and orthopedics. Palliative care for children is also provided on the unit. Our fully trained nursing staff, along with general practitioners, surgeons, and pediatricians will provide quality care to your children. The Western Health Pediatric Service partners with the Janeway Children’s Hospital for tertiary care.

We encourage you to participate in your child’s care. One parent or guardian is able to stay with your child during the night; rollaway cots may be available on request.

In the Adolescent Mental Health unit, we provide a safe, therapeutic, and caring environment for children and adolescents experiencing psychological, physical, behavioral and addictive disorders, through an interdisciplinary team approach. Individual plans of care and treatment will be developed for each child and family.

If your child is admitted under Adolescent Mental Health services, special guidelines and unit expectations will be followed. On admission, your child’s nurse will review this with you.

For community based adolescent mental health services see Blomidon Place.

There is a school teacher on the unit Monday-Thursday from 9:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. for school age children to maintain their studies. The teacher connects with the school your child is attending to develop the work plan for your child.
